Since 1985 the dynamics of an alpine population of the common toad Bufo bufo in the Bernese Alps (Gr. Scheidegg Grindelwald) is studied by means of transponders.
Since 1996 the phenology of reproduction of three brown frog species (Rana latastei, R.dalmatina and R.temporaria) is studied at 25 breeding ponds in Mendrisiotto, Southern Switzerland (in cooperation with a number of other biologists). Similar long-term controls are made at several breeding ponds of Rana temporaria in the vicinity of Berne (the longest time-series started in 1970).
K.Grossenbacher is Co-editor of the „Handbuch der Reptilien und Amphibien Europas“, published by AULA-Verlag, Wiebelsheim. Volume Urodela 1 was published in 1999, Urodela 2 is in advanced process, two volumes of anura are planned.
In cooperation with KARCH and Naturmuseum Erfurt a database of european herpetological litterature is kept up-to-date and published regularly („Schriftenschau für den Feldherpetologen“).
Since 1996 an inventory of all beaver colonies (Castor fiber) in the Canton of Berne and their development in time and space is made during wintertime.
